I'm remembering a phase of my childhood where I really liked to sleep outside, in our yard, with a sheet tacked up to our fence. My little sister, Audrey, camped out with me sometimes. It was an adventure, and practice homelessness. --sushisticks
And we ate jelly bellies and watched Power Rangers on that tiny TV connected to a giant extension cord while eating bowls of cereal... oh man, those were the days.
I liked to pretend I was homeless when I was a kid, too. My dad was always so upset about money, I was convinced that it was a real possibility. I made a plan to find a group of homeless people and organize them; everyone would find some food during the day and we would all get together at night and make soup. Because homeless people are like hobos in the movies, under the tracks with a can of beans, right? I also came up with a rickshaw type of business. We would use the giant box our refrigerator came in to pull people around town for money.
I also planned on running away for most of middle school. I made a list of things to do to get ready. One of them was to sneak out at night and sleep in my sleeping bag at the park in order to get used to sleeping outdoors.
A sheet tied to the fence is genius. Next time I run away, I will add that to my to-do list.
